Timonthy McCall (Dr.)

MD, Author & Yoga Researcher

Dr Timothy McCall is a board-certified physician specialising in internal medicine. He is the author of three books:

  • Examining Your Doctor: A Patient’s Guide to Avoiding Harmful Medical Care (Citadel Press)
  • Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam)
  • Saving my Neck: A Doctor’s East/West Journey through Cancer (Whole World Publishing)

He practiced medicine for more than 10 years in the Boston area before devoting himself full-time to investigating and teaching yoga therapy. Certified as a yoga therapist by the International Association of Yoga Therapists, he is the Founder/Director of Yoga As Medicine Seminars and Teacher Trainings and, until 2016, co-directed a yoga therapy center just outside of New York City.

Timothy has travelled extensively, studying with many of the world’s leading yoga teachers and yoga therapists. This includes BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar. His primary teachers have been Patricia Walden, Rod Stryker and Donald Moyer. He has practiced yoga and meditation from various traditions for over 20 years and Tantra for more than a decade. Since 2005, he has studied with a traditional Ayurvedic doctor, Chandukutty Vaidyar. Here he has spent over a year at Chandukutty’s clinic in Kerala, India.

Timothy still travels regularly to India to research yoga, yoga therapy and Ayurveda, and to study with a traditional Ayurvedic Vaidhya (doctor) in Kerala. He also studies with a Tantric master in Bangalore.

Timothy, alongside his wife Eliana Moreira McCall, lectures both in the US and internationally, delivering a range of workshops. This includes his Yoga therapy training, Yoga as Medicine: The Art of Science and Holistic Medicine.

His main focus since the year 2000 has been investigating the therapeutic aspects of yoga, as well as the scientific explanations of yoga’s effects.
