Zara Matthews

Yoga Therapist

Zara’s love of Yoga is inspired and informed by some of the world’s most respected Yoga teachers, including Donna Farhi, Richard Miller and Judith Lasater. She enjoys an eclectic approach to yoga blending the influences of her many teachers and traditions, including Tai Chi, Ashtanga, Siddha, Hatha, Anusara and Iyengar Yoga. Zara has completed the Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy, has undertaken advanced Yoga Studies with Donna Farhi, Yoga Therapeutics Training with Judith Lasater and Irest Yoga Nidra training with Richard Miller.

Zara combines her deep understanding of yoga with a long professional history within the mental health arena as a psychotherapist, counsellor, mentor and registered nurse. She offers years of practical clinical experience, insight and sensitivity to her life, her yoga therapy and teaching, and work as a health professional. Zara is currently undertaking a Masters of Mental Health Nursing and has completed a Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as, studies in sexuality and sandplay therapy.

Zara has extensive experience as a group facilitator. She worked at Belmont Psychiatric Hospital in Queensland for 5 years and ran daily Cognitive and Behavioural modification groups in a specialised unit for people suffering phobias, anxiety, depression and from substance abuse. Zara also facilitated regular Svadhyaya personal reflective study groups for Yoga teacher trainees during the Yoga Presence Teacher Training in 2010 to 2013. For the past 7 years, she has run relaxation, meditation and asana groups at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney and through her private counselling and psychotherapy practice.

Zara integrates the knowledge of modern psychotherapy with the expansive ancient wisdom of yoga. Personally inspirited by the transformative effects of these sciences, Zara sincerely considers her dharma as an educator, is to cast the benefits far and wide, so countless people benefit. From this platform Zara offers yoga therapy, psychotherapy, counselling, yoga classes and workshops, Irest yoga nidra, meditation and mentorship services.

Zara is a member of Yoga Australia, International Association of Yoga Therapists, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), BKS Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia, Siddha Yoga Foundation

Inspired by human relationships, movement and each individuals potential, Zara loves to compassionately share the exploration of the hidden assumptions, which inform our choices and actions. Those that enrich and those that hinder present experience. Zara carries a foundational belief that through self-enquiry into our unconscious wisdom and movement patterns we may expand mindfulness, insight and the quality of life we experience within each second.
